 Affordable housing, recreational activities and big business characterize South Fulton County. Defined as the portion of the City of Atlanta and unincorporated Fulton County that lies south of I-20, South Fulton is made up of 125,000 acres of countryside and cityscapes.
South Fulton is a transportation hub. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport ranks as one of the busiest airports in the world, and is just minutes from anywhere in South Fulton. Four interstate highways (I-75, I-85, I-20 and I-285) make the county accessible in all directions. Two major rail freight depots, Norfolk-Southern and CSX, operate from South Fulton, as well as Fulton County-Brown Field, home of the state's largest fleet of corporate jets.
This powerful transportation network brings major companies to the region, such as Delta Air Lines, Ford Motor Company and Dobbs International Services. South Fulton is home to the metro area's only velodrome, where cyclists trained for the Olympic trials. Wolf Creek Trap and Skeet range was also the site for Olympic events in 1996, and is the largest trap and skeet range in the entire nation. If you'd rather take in a Braves game, the state-of-the-art Turner Field is an attraction all its own. And if you enjoy concerts, then check out Atlanta's largest outdoor amphitheater, the Coca-Cola Lakewood Amphitheatre.
There is no doubt plenty to do! However, when you finally do head home, you can choose from six towns that offer affordable housing in the heart of the metro area.
The two largest communities are College Park and East Point. While there is no college in College Park and East Point is indeed west of Atlanta, these towns make up in charm what they lack in nomenclature. Both were once railroad stops that developed into something more. East Point's population of approximately 34,000 enjoy easy access to Atlanta and housing that starts in the high $70,000s. College Park, home to 20.457 residents, is also known for its reasonable housing and its proximity.
Fairburn, located just 10 miles from the Atlanta airport, has a population of less than 5,000 Hapeville has a similar population, but boasts a very high average household income of $40,708. Union City is larger, with a population of nearly 10,000. Its average income level is even higher, at %50,159. Palmetto is located on the edge of Fulton County, with parts spilling into Coweta County. It has the smallest population of the county (3,025). Growth in the area remains centered around the airport, with development of outlying areas occurring as well.
South Fulton is served by the award-winning Fulton County School System, as well as a number of private schools of all types. Health care is provided by South Fulton Medical Center and Southwest Hospital and Medical Center. These full-service hospitals provide general acute care and are each equipped with specialized services. In conclusion, South Fulton County is a multi-faceted metropolitan community that offers a combination of big business, quality housing, and valuable amenities and services. This blend of urbanism and genteel suburbanism attracts many to the area.
